Episode 209: Moving On Up, pt1   To keep good talent, many churches are moving staff to new positions in the church. example - Youth minister is getting older and doesn't want to do all the youth stuff anymore.  example - Music minister is getting older but sees that the church needs to change direction to reach younger people.  He doesn't feel equipped to lead differently but loves the church and would like to stay there.   Is it a good idea to hire from within:   The benefits: An insider can probably cut the transition time down for the congregation. An insider knows how the church works. An insider has some key relationships already in tact. An insider  has an awareness  of the church history. The cautions: The personal transition time for the leader often happens at a slower pace. An insider is tempted to make changes too quickly because they have such a deep awareness of what is wrong. How do you determine an event your church has is outliving it's purpose?

1. Gather post-event information

• the next event is determined by the outcome of the last event

Consider an event's purpose?

• Does it match your purpose?
• What is the goal
  • outreach
  • inreach
  • service

Consider your ability to do the event well

• differing expectations for different events
  • church picnic versus a regional conference.
• people power
• resources

Consider the benefit of the event.

• Is it worth the effort? Or could something else have yielded better results?
• Is your church energized?

Consider the cost?

• Was the investment of time, talent, and treasures representative of the benefit?

If you don't  plant, you won't harvest.   We need to build a sense of expectations:   Plan for guests how do make them feel welcome plan for the guests you want have don't make your guests targets Plan for decisions are you asking for those how are you gonna handle those don't put people on the spot Plan for new members how are you going to receive new members New members class? "Expectations are landmines, you can lose a limb if you don't know what they are." Difference between a preacher and a pastor

A Preacher is:

1. Has the wrong motivation

• in it for the money
• in it for name recognition

Tends to live in his own world

Keeps church relationships at a distance

Isn't there when needed

runs out of things to say quickly

 

A Pastor is:

1. Is motivated by God's Word
2. Gets involved in the lives of His congregation
3. Allows for the joy and pain of close church relationships
4. Is all in when needed
5. Because he knows his people and God's Word always has something to say.

The local church is important because it is God's chosen instrument to reach the world

The love affair with Mega church culture is over.

• small is the new large

The local pastor

1. needs to be lifted up - but not worshipped
2. needs to be leading the church - but not burned out

They are not coming back - so reach out to them like pre-Christians and bring them in again.
